Things you should know before you start

Hello,

Getting started into fitness is the hardest step so I'm going to share with you some of the things I wish I knew before I got started with it all!

  • Progress takes time! I'm sorry to say but you aren't going to suddenly get your 'perfect' body or reach your big goals in a couple weeks, or possibly even months! You will probably see more results at the start but the more you get into it, the slower more progress will take to happen, if that makes sense, this is because of the idea of 'nooby gains'. This will also mean that you may be able to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time! Cherish this because you won't be able to do them both at the same time forever!

  • You cannot spot reduce! This means that you cannot choose where you want to lose fat from. To lose fat in a specific area, you will need to lower your overall body fat percentage. And unfortunately in some cases, this means losing fat from places you don't really want to lose fat from too, like your boobs!! To lose fat you need to be in a caloric deficit, and so burning more calories a day than you are consuming. Figure out how many calories a day you burn at rest (BMR), then take away a percentage of that depending on how active you are (TDEE). I find the best thing to use for this is the iifym.com calculator!

  • Ab workouts will not give you abs! Low body fat percentage will give you abs, also it unfortunately has a lot to do with genetics! Everyone has abdominal muscles but most of the time, particularly in women, they are covered by fat. To reveal them you need to have an overall low body fat percentage, but doing ab workouts when you're at a low body fat percentage can help to reveal them. Also doing these ab workouts can help improve your core strength and therefore improve your other lifts so do not neglect them completely!

  • START NOW! Stop with the 'I'll start on Monday' 'I'll start next month' or 'I'll get back on track Monday'! Why wait for Monday?! Every moment can be a fresh start if you want it to be!! The sooner you start, the sooner you will reach your goals! I promise it will be worth it!

  • Don't push yourself too hard! You don't want to burn yourself out and lose your motivation! Start slow and build it up! Also, don't worry if you miss a workout or two, it's not the end of the world and you will not be ruining your progress! Always remember why you started and don't feel discouraged if you have a bad workout, day or week!

  • Enjoy and trust the process! There's no point doing something that you don't enjoy, and if you enjoy it, it won't feel like a chore and then ultimately, the results & progress you get from it will just be an added bonus! Additionally, as I said results take time, so you have to be patient and trust that what you're doing is the right thing and that the results will come! Celebrate each small step and it will make the whole thing even more enjoyable! Most importantly, never give up!!
