New healthy find - Quinoa

I'm sure many people have had, or at least heard of Quinoa before, but I have only just tried it! I found a recipe through pinterest that included it, and it sounded good, so I decided to try it! Sorry, I do not have the original link to the recipe.

Tabata Workout

After watching Brittany Lesser's youtube video, I discovered this Tabata workout. Tabata is basically a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) cardio that really kicks your butt!!

There are 8 exercises, you work for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and do it for 4 rounds.

Favourite exercise

This will be a short post today but I just wanted to share with you guys one of my favourite exercises to do- the deadlift! I recently managed to deadlift my bodyweight, which is 70kgs, for 5 reps!! I am so excited and proud of myself as it is pretty hard to do!

Here is a video of me managing it!

Fitness Tag

I was watching some fitness youtubers the other day and one of them (sorry I can't remember who but I will list some at the end) did the 'Fitness Tag' so I thought it would be fun to answer the questions here!

All my pictures, the bottom right on is from my Blogilates 'Hot Body book'

1. If you never got into lifting what would you be doing?
Well I would be so much more unhealthy, probably still be struggling loads with depression/body image and probably be having a really bad gap year!

2. What is your favourite and least favourite body part to work?
I don't train different body parts on different days (like 'leg day' or whatever) but I would definitely say my favourite is leg/glute workouts and least favourite is probably abs. I want abs but I find ab workouts really boring.

3. What would your last meal on earth be?
It would definitely include pizza with loads of different toppings, probably also with some sort of chocolate desert!

4. If you had to choose between only eating carbs or only fats, which would you choose?
Probably carbs, I love carbs!

5. Who is your 'crush' in the fitness community?
I'm not that involved in the community/industry other than following people on tumblr and instagram but probably Ellen aka Fitspooration (who I talked about before) and Aubrey aka Aubernutter.

6. If you have to pick one food to have 0 calories (but would still taste the same) what would you choose?
Hmm either something like pizza which I don't have that often so I could eat it more often OORR peanut butter which I eat aaaalll the time haha

7. Would you rather never be allowed to lift again but have your ideal physique or be allowed to lift but work your butt of for your physique.
I think if I was just given my ideal physique my life would be so boring! Lifting and working hard on my body has not only made me look better but has improved my mental state massively and has improved my body image. Also I feel that I wouldn't appreciate it as much if I was just given it and I would probably just find new things not to like. SO I would definitely pick lifting but working my butt off for my physique (which I am currently doing).

8. What are your short and long term fitness goals?
My goals in general are to improve my body, be healthy and fit and be the best I can be. I also want to be able to squat and deadlift my body weight (I'm so close!)

9. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to this lifestyle?
I am so much happier! With myself and my body and just in general! I went through quite a bad stage in my life but now I am feeling good, am more confident and am loving myself!

10. Favourite thing about fitness in general?
I love talking to new people online, the community is so supportive and lovely. I love seeing progress and smashing goals. I don't know just everything to do with fitness etc is great!

11. What is your favourite way to get cardio in?
I used to swim all the time but after I stopped and then when I started lifting properly I stopped cardio all together. I love dancing but I don't have any dancing group or anything so now what I do for cardio is running, I run 1 or 2 times a week and am building up to be able to run 5k.

Thats it! :)

The fitness youtubers that I have just started watching/watch are:

Nikki Blackketter
Brittany Loeser
Valerie Benoit

If you have any others to recommend, please do!

10 things that have made me happy recently

I'm feeling happy today so I thought I would share 10 things that have made me happy recently. I thought I would do 'recently' and not in a specific time frame as I can't remember specifically when these all happened haha

1. My 'hot body year round' book by Blogilates aka Cassey Ho arrived! I've already made some of the recipes and done some of the workouts and it's amazing!

2. Last weekend (the bank holiday weekend) we went to a huge house in Devon for the weekend for my cousin's hen do! It was so much fun and made us all so much more excited for the wedding!

3. I managed to just go up to all my cousins friends and just start talking to them and hanging out with them at the hen do, yes the alcohol helped, but I am really proud of myself for that because otherwise I would have just been sitting with my mum, aunties and sister being bored.

4. It's officially 6 months until I go see Imagine Dragons again and 30 something days until I go see 5sos again!! So excited!

5. I've been feeling really body positive recently which just puts me in a much better mood for everything else.

6. I got my first pay day from my new job and it made me happy that I actually am getting some money again!

7. I managed to eat whatever I wanted over the weekend which included Krispy Kreme donuts, 2 massive meals including desserts, crisps and chocolates, without feeling really guilty and still feeling good with myself!

8. I finally caught up with Game of Thrones so now I can actually understand what people are talking about!

9. Having been terrible at all things make up, I finally have 2 go-to lipsticks and lip liners which I absolutely love!

10. I have a playlist on spotify that I don't ever feel like skipping any of the songs and it includes some new songs that I am really liking!

For now, thank you and goodbye,

Today I would like to share with you some of my progress over the last year/few months, I can't remember when all of these were taken but yeah haha
I know not all of you will find this interesting or motivating/helpful in any way but I'm feeling really body positive today and am really making progress towards loving myself!

As I have mentioned before I work pretty hard for my results, they take time and need a lot of patience. In previous posts I have said what I do for my workouts, so here are some results.

If you follow my tumblr then you will have seen most of these pictures as I document my progress more on there.

My stomach is shrinking (slowly) and my baby abs do start to show some times!
These pictures were probably a few months apart.
The picture on the left was taken a couple months a go and the one on the right was taken last week, you can kind of seen that my tummy is smaller and my quads have grown!

I can't remember the time scale between these two but as you can see my back is so much more defined and toned!

Sorry the picture on the left is a bit dark but you can sort of see that my bicep and shoulder are more defined and bigger!

This picture was taken last night and wow I'm so proud of it, just look how strong I am! My biceps and shoulder just wow, sorry I'm so impressed with myself haha

I also wanted to talk about the non-physical results that I have gained from working out and eating healthier. I am so much more confident in myself and in my body, I feel happier most of the time, I have more energy and find everyday activities easier. It has helped my depression a lot and I feel a lot less stressed and anxious about things. As I said earlier, I am loving myself and my body more, this isn't just because my body is becoming what I want it to be but also because I am more accepting of my flaws and learning to love every part of my body and what it can do for me!

I hope this post didn't come across as vain or bragging but I am just really happy with my progress!
I also hope that this gave someone motivation, but remember you need to aim to improve your body, not because there's anything wrong with it but because you love it and want to be the best you that you can be! Additionally, don't use other peoples body as your 'goal' you are becoming a better, fitter, and healthier version of yourself!

Motivational Monday

Louise aka Sprinkle of Glitter always posts 'Motivational Monday' posts on Mondays and I love the idea of giving people a little help for getting through the worst day of the week. I don't have a little motivational story to tell you like she does but I hope that at least one of these gives you a little bit of motivation!

Healthy snack ideas

If you're like me, then you love to snack, which can make healthy eating hard sometimes. I am always on the lookout for more healthy snacks so I thought I would share with you some of my ideas. These obviously don't have to be just snacks, sometimes I eat these as breakfast as well (I don't tend to stick to the idea that breakfast should be your biggest meal and dinner should be your smallest).

Anyways, on to the food!

Avocado on toast

This one is pretty simple:
-Slice up an avocado
-Butter some toast (preferably wholemeal bread)
-Lay the avocado on top

I used a whole avocado when I made this and that is why I used two bits of bread, usually I would just have one.

This one is also pretty simple:
-Toast a bagel (preferable wholemeal),
-Spread some peanut butter on
-Slice up a banana and place that on top

Again, it would be better to have just half a bagel but my mum wanted me to use it up as this was just before we went away a couple of weekends ago.

Healthy pancakes

I love pancakes so these are amazing:
-Mash up one banana in a bowl
-Crack two eggs in and whisk them together
-Cook them in a pan like normal

I found this makes 2-3 pancakes.
I wouldn't recommend putting extra banana on top, the banana taste in the pancakes is quite strong, I just put some on top for the picture haha

I would also recommend making smoothies, they are really yummy and are a great way of getting in more fruit and veg into your diet, I made a post of my favourite recipes here.

Workout at home

I know for some people it can be quite hard to be able to get to a gym or it can be too expensive or they just prefer to workout at home, so I thought I would share some of the things I do/videos I do when I want to workout from home.

Cassey Ho is a certified fitness instructor with an inspirational story and a motivational Youtube Channel. Her videos vary from focusing working on certain muscles to healthy recipes and informational and interesting videos. I have been using and watching her videos for while now and I think that they are truly amazing, I can definitely feel the burn afterwards!

30 Day Shred
I'm not really someone who agrees with quick fixes as they are not long term, however, on a day when I haven't managed to get to the gym or out for a run I think that Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred videos (which I found on youtube) are great. They really get my heart rate up and really push me.

As I may have mentioned before, I get a lot of inspiration from tumblr and over time of having my fitness tumblr I have collected a few smaller workouts:

As much as I hate burpees, the burpee challenge is actually really good!

Some of the apps that I use are:
-Adrian James 6 pack abs
-Lorna Jane
-Nike Running
-Fitness Point

10 things my older self would tell me

After reading many '10 things I would tell my younger self' posts, most recently Milk Bubble Tea, I starting thinking about what I think my older self would wish she could tell me now. I'm not sure if this has been done before, probably by someone somewhere, but I was quite proud of myself for coming up with this haha

Picture found on tumblr, credit to owner

So here is my list of 10 things my older self would probably want to tell me now:

  1. Just sit down and read those books that you want to read, stop putting it off, you'll regret it later if you don't read them now.
  2. Get out the house and go for runs more often, you know you want to and you know it will help you reach your goals more quickly!
  3. Stop comparing yourself to others, I know this is common advice but you'll be able to love yourself more if you focus on yourself and not on what others are achieving or what they look like.
  4. Get out of your comfort zone more often, it'll be good practice for the future.
  5. Eat as well as you can most of the time, but please don't forget to treat yourself sometimes, and definitely do not feel guilty about it afterwards.
  6. Wear whatever you want to wear, gym tops with slogans like 'drop it like a squat', interesting tops, dresses, whatever and stop caring what people might think about it, if you like it, wear it!
  7. Stay strong because it really does get better.
  8. Stop spending your money on things that you don't really need, you need to save!
  9. Yes Netflix is great but you are allowed to go do other things, even if it is still at home or especially if it's meeting up with friends outside of the house!
  10. Never be ashamed of the things you like/love, who cares if you're probably too old for Disney movies and cuddly toys, who cares if some people don't like your music taste, it is all what makes up you and you are unique and amazing!

Okay so I don't actually know what my future self would wish that she could tell me now but I imagine it would be something like that. They are all things that I need to be doing but I'm too good at procrastinating and staying in my comfort zone of my bed and Netflix.
Maybe I'll try to work harder at these!

10 things that have made me happy this week

I love reading Rosie's posts in her series '10 things that've made me happy this week' so as this week I have been doing lots of interesting things I thought I would share 10 things that have made me happy this week.
This week has been half term, obviously not for me because I'm on my gap year but for my younger brother and my mum (she's a teaching assistant) and my dad took the week off work.
Usually in this week we go skiing but for multiple reasons we didn't this year so we decided to make it as fun as we could.

1. Going to the cinema with my family to see Jupiter Ascending. We haven't been to the cinema together for ages and it was such a lovely evening. We went for dinner at Bella Italia afterwards.

2. Meeting up with one of my closest friends for coffee. She's at Reading Uni at the moment so I don't get to see her that often.

3. Going to Brighton with my parents. Walking round the lanes is always lovely, and on the pier we decided to go on the bumper cars which was a lot of fun! Also, there's the cutest little cake shop in Brighton which sells gluten free cupcakes! (picture in the collage above)

4. Relaxing and pampering myself. I bought a bath bomb from lush recently and so I lit some candles, put on some relaxing music and had a nice bath. When I got out I put on a face mask and read my book. I felt so chilled and good afterwards!

5. Going to London Zoo! Most importantly, seeing the penguins there! I will post more about that next time.

6. Going to the theatre in London. We saw The Commitments, and although we were quite far back and so felt out of the atmosphere and we felt there wasn't much of a story line, it was a lot of fun and the songs were great!

7. On Thursday, me, my brother and my dad went bowling! We haven't been in so long but it was a lot of fun. Both my brother and I got strikes on our first goes!

8. On Friday we went up to London again and this time we went to the Natural History Museum, it was very crowded and hectic but still very interesting and fun. We then wondered around Covent Garden.

9. Making our way through the X-men films. As a family we decided that, as we wanted to watch the new x-men films, we should start from the beginning and make our way through them. We're nearly finished now though!

10. I have organised to go visit my sister at Uni next week, from Wednesday to Saturday, so I am excited about that! One of my friends from school also goes to the same Uni so I will hopefully see her then too!

Fitness Motivation

I've seen quite a few comments on my previous fitness posts (here, here and here) of people saying that they wished that they had more motivation to work out and stay healthy so I thought I would share some tips of how I stay motivated!

In the past I've really struggled with my body image and with food issues, but about a year ago I decided that I need to be healthier, mentally and physically. I started going to the gym more often with my sister, at first I was just doing cardio because I didn't know anything else. As I got more into my fitness journey I did more research and with my sisters help (she started doing more at Uni) I started doing more weights and now my workout consists of mainly weights.
I find exercise a really good stress release.

The main source of my motivation comes from tumblr, there's a whole lovely fitness community on there who you can talk to, ask advice and who can help you stay motivated!

I've also created a fitness planner where I keep note of everything I've eaten and drunk each day, what workouts I have done and how I'm feeling. On some of the pages I have created motivational pages:

First motivational page done 😊💪Next two motivational pages done!

Something else I use for motivation is Pinterest, there are so many great pictures, tips and recipes on there which are great!

I've found that having a motivational background on my phone has helped because it's something that I look at all the time and its just that extra reminder that I need. My current one says 'I may not be the strongest, I may not be the fastest but I'll be darned if I'm not trying my hardest'. The picture I found on tumblr.

  • The more that you work out, the more that it becomes a habit and then the more that you enjoy it.
  • Don't focus on your weight because it really doesn't mean much and muscle is denser than fat meaning that you could be getting leaner but could be actually heavier.
  • Get a workout buddy! Then you can motivate each other and encourage each other not to skip a workout.
  • Don't get too stressed out if you do miss a workout, it's not huge problem and won't affect your progress!
  • Buy new workout gear! I find this always helps because I can not wait to wear it!
  • Don't make it a short term fix, make it a lifestyle change.
  • Make sure you're doing something you enjoy and have things that make it more enjoyable e.g. a great workout playlist.
  • Don't use other people's bodies as you're only motivation/goals, you will never look like them but you can look like a better version of you!
  • Do this for yourself, not for anyone else.

Fitness Wishlist

As I have said in many posts before, fitness is a big part of my life and I am always on the lookout for new workout clothes.

I have found that buying new workout gear always motivates me if I'm ever feeling a bit low or have a lack of motivation.

When I first started working out properly, I thought that to look the part you had to wear expensive Nike clothes and trainers, but obviously I learned that, that is just what those companies want you to believe and that you can get loads of nice clothes for so much cheaper!

Here are some of the items that I want/will be buying soon!

Healthy dinner

I actually cooked! I've cooked quite a few times in the last few weeks so I'm pretty proud of myself!
In this post I said that if I cooked any healthy meals that I thought went pretty well I would blog them, I'm not sure how healthy this meal really is but it seems healthy enough to me and is gluten free!

picture taken from my cook book (see below)

Chicken with Cornmeal Dumplings

serves 4
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into small pieces
  • 4 teaspoons Cajun spice blend
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 100g smokes streaky bacon, chopped
  • 2 peppers
  • 200ml Chicken Stock
  • 4 small tomatoes, skinned and quartered
  • 100ml double cream
  • salt and pepper

Dumplings ingredients
  • 125g self-raising flour
  • 125g cornmeal (cornflour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried chilli flakes
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
  • 75g cheddar cheese, grated
  • 50g butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 100ml milk

  1. Heat the oil in a large, shallow flameproof casserole and fry the chicken pieces for about 5 minutes until lightly browned. Stir in the spice blend and cook for a further minute. Drain to a plate. (We started everything off in a large wok and moved it into a casserole dish just before it went into the oven)
  2. Add the onion, bacon and peppers and fry, stirring frequently, for 10 minutes or until beginning to colour.
  3. Return the chicken to the casserole (here's where we put everything into the dish) and stir in the stock and a little seasoning. Bring to the boil, cover with a lid and bake in a preheated oven, 180 degrees C (350 Fahrenheit), Gas mark 4, for 45 minutes until the chicken is tender.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the dumplings. Mix together the flour, cornmeal (cornflour), chilli flakes, coriander and cheese in a bowl. Beat the butter with the egg and milk and add to the bowl. Mix together to make a thick paste that is fairly sticky but holds its shape. (We found this only took about 15 minutes so started it after the chicken had been in for half an hour).
  5. Stir the tomatoes and cream into the chicken mixture and season to taste. Put spoonfuls of the dumpling mixture over the top (we found this easier to do if we made the dumplings with our hands and places them on the top, they sink into the mixture a bit). Return to the over, uncovered, for a further 30 minutes or until the dumplings have slightly risen and formed a firm crust.
It actually came out pretty much looking like the picture in the book which is unusual when I cook! I found it fairly easy to cook (I still had help but for a beginner I think that's fair enough). It was really yummy and everyone really loved it!

The cook book that I got it from was this student cook book that I got for Christmas. There are loads of really yummy recipes in it and it even has a section specifically for healthy recipes! The pages are set out really clearly and they even give an 'affordability rating' out of three for each recipe, this one was a 2.

January detox

I am not someone who really believes in 'diets' as they have never really worked for me in the past (either gone too far or nowhere at all) and are only really short-term; however, after Christmas I always feel the need to eat extra healthily.

As I mentioned in this post I like to stay as fit and healthy as I can. This January I have decided that I do not eat enough fruit and that I would love to try having more smoothies. I am also going to try cooking some healthy recipes over the next month or two so if I feel I have done a good job, they may appear in future posts.

As for today, I would like to share some of my favourite smoothie recipes (you can pretty much just add whatever you like, with a bit of liquid if you prefer them smoother, but these some that I have done):

I saw this recipe with celery instead of banana but we didn't have any celery in the house so I made:

-2 apples
-2 carrots
-1 banana
-Orange juice (however much you like)

Berry smoothie:

- Handful of strawberries
- Handful of blueberries
- Handful of raspberries
- 2 tbsp honey
- Some ice cubes

Banana and peanut butter smoothie:

- 2 bananas
- 1 pint of milk
- 2 tablespoons of peanut butter

Orange super-smoothie

-1 carrot
-1 orange
-1 banana
-1 apricot
- Some ice cubes

I find smoothies a really healthy and great thing to have pre-made so if you're running late in the morning you can have them for breakfast, or just as a healthy snack. I've been drinking a lot of smoothies so far this year!

For now, thank you and goodbye,
